Merrell was a Beautiful talented young Man. I've been a TRUE fan of Godspell.. I watch the movie & listen to the sound at least a few times a year since the 70's .. My sisters were apart of Say theatre in the late 70's & put the production together to remake Godspell at my church back then... The movie & Merrell's song still makes me tear/cry to this day... God Bless his soul

My Lord he was beautiful and talented! My Godspell soundtrack is something that I cannot give up. And after seeing another airing of this movie, my heart is broken now because I googled the cast. I saw about Thigpen on the news years ago, but Merrell?? He was gorgeous and a real talent and beauty. God has some explaining to do when I enter the pearly gates about this AIDS thing. Makes me work harder to preventing this horrid disease and I will, and have take more proactive stance.!! I wonder if Mr. Jackson and I would have clicked? Especially politically and socially? Id like to think so.

Merrell sang the song from Godspell ALL GOOD GIFTS with God at this side; it was beyond beautiful. I don't know what happened to that video, and why only that one was pulled from youtube, etc. It is painful and horrific to the heart not to be able to watch that when times are rough. I have followed his path to some degree in acting (Friday Night Lights/ 4 seasons) and films such as "Temple Grandin," Batman and Tonto [Army & Johnny Depp], etc., and I too paint. For what ever reasons that I hope sound sane, I have always felt a bond with Merrell and I am his polar opposite in appearance. Am a blonde female, I too loved the dancing, musicals too and much of my family is from Chicago. It's something (bond) that can't be explained yet exists and I send him prayer, thoughts of gratitude often enought. I hum that song repeatedly; it is a life saver and puts all things back in order when needed. Wish to God I could've met him and years back when I first saw the now pulled video and did a search on him, at that time, no information was available but for some early highschool and up to Godspell... nothing else. I did some serious research and found much of what exists today as I feel that is the least anyone can do for a man who has gifted us this way for decades. Victor, Robin, Jeffrey--- all of them including the writer created a masterpiece that will never be forgotten. The many 'early' deaths or missing information is disturbing yet I will never stop trying to find more on him. ~Love you, Merrell and forever grateful.

I was truly saddened when I learned that Merrell has passed. The two scenes of him in Godspell that stick out for me are; The last supper scene, when he looks up at Jesus. Your words are exactly right. Growing up young and African American in west suburban Chicago, there were few real places of refuge from what we (the few of us) experienced day to day. The suburbs then were anything but diverse, anything but welcoming--everything short of an inclusive multicultural environ. For me, my departures were to and through the music of the time. It was more than 30 years ago, but Godspell contains no more powerful and heartfelt performances than Merrell Jackson's singing of "All Good Gifts." Before I ever knew his name, or even that he was from Chicago, I knew and related to his voice through this song. It's message helped sustain me through a what was a tumultuous high school experience, through four years of college thousands of miles from home and it gives me pause to this very day. Although I've owned the soundtrack for many years, I found the DVD online recently, purchased it and was blessed to experience and be touched by Mr. Jackson once again tonight. That he lived is part of the reason I'm alive today. Thank you, Merrell, and family.

My husband and I rented Godspell this weekend. I have sung those songs for years and wanted to share it with him. Merrell really touched my heart and I had to find out more about him before all the other cast members.I found this site first and you can imagine my sorrow of learning of his passing. I'm glad we had his" good gift" for a time. God bless him and you for honoring him. xoxo

Profound song. I'd heard about Godspell several times over the years but never had a desire to see it...waaay out of my generation. But one night it was on tv, so I stopped a minute and Merrell was performing his song. I was blown away at the shear praise and worship that was in this song through his voice. I was truly blessed.

This is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful person! I think the site might've gotten started because of me. I wrote a book and created a website to promote it and mentioned Merrell's name in my high school bio. Rachel (from Phila.) found it and emailed me. She was a big fan or his and wanted to do a site. So I told her what I knew about Merrell who was a former high school classmate and choirmate. Merrell was a truly gifted person, and his talents extended to other areas too. On prom night, he told me and Brenda Farmer (who was senior class soloist) that we should seize the day, that life waited for no one. When he wrote in my yearbook, he urged me to find excitement, love and adventure and not to wait for it to find me. After Brenda's untimely death (in an accident after graduation), I've tried to do just that. So, if you are listening, Merrell, I have tried to live life to the fullest! Thank you for showing me how!

Godspell is my former pastor's favorite movie so he recently lent me his copy to watch. Though I grew up in the 1970s (in my Jewish family) I did not see the movie until the 1980s on an Easter Sunday after I became a Christian. Merrell's voice and song was the most sincere and lovingly sang. People who say the movie is blasphemous couldn't possibly have seen him sing this song and how worshipful it seemed. The tune and lyrics stay with you. And his smile was indeed infectious.
